What a Logo Can Show
Last week I wrote about the Word of God having power to create an entire material universe and how incomprehensible that is. And how powerful that is. There’s another image of Jesus in the opening and closing of Revelation: “his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. . . and out of his mouth came a sharp double edged sword“ (1:15-16) and “his name is the Word of God . . . Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations.” (19:13,15) This strange and frightening image ties in the Word of God, the logos, with his speaking voice and this powerful sword. So this is the logos that creates and destroys.
Logos has several nuances of meaning. This Greek word can mean 1) logic 2) communication 3) reason 4) rational thinking and communication and 5) word. Jesus was God’s communication. Jesus was God’s rationality and logic. Jesus was God reasoning with us. Jesus was the Word (like the Bible) made into a person (the Word made flesh). It’s like taking the Bible and turning it into a man. What do you get? Jesus: God’s effort at communicating to us with the ultimate visual aid.
Just think of the English word logo: it’s an identifying mark or symbol for a group that conveys what the group is about, like the Nike swoosh or the Target target. Jesus was, and is, God’s logo.
All the myriad meanings and ideas behind logo are why I chose it for my blog name. I chose it to represent my deep love for words and my deep desire to communicate Jesus to people. Now, make sure you take some time this week to read The Logos. It’s a powerful thing.
